What we stand for
Since beginning, the Soma Initiative has funded the secondary school (high school) boarding education of 8 boys and girls throughout Kenya, and one student in Kingston, Jamaica and one student in Kumba, Cameroon. In sub-Saharan Africa, like many developing areas of the world, education is not only an advantage but essential to social mobility and the gateway to higher education. The Soma Initiative works directly with primary school teachers and administrators to identify promising and gifted youth who have gained acceptance to top secondary schools but whose family lack the resources to fund their education. Youth sponsored by the Soma Initiative are provided with all four years of secondary school tuition as well as books, uniforms, and other necessities. Students meet regularly with our director of operations when on holiday from classes for fellowship and team building workshops. Student school academic performance is also closely monitored and the initiative provides academic support on an as needed basis. As our students approach graduation they are paired with mentors who provide guidance and counseling as they pursue higher education or enter into the workforce.
Our initial intention when we set out to establish the Soma Initiative was to provide educational support to underserved communities in developing countries with a focus on Kenya and Cameroon. However, since inception, we have extended support to Jamaica and are open to establishing support to our local communities in the United States for students who demonstrate need especially during this difficult time with Covid-19 pandemic exerting a socio-economic toll on families.
Education and literacy is the catalyst we need to change lives and this world.
Our Mission is to:
Provide educational resources in rural areas to enhance learning environments, improve literacy and increase educational outcomes.
Identify and support children in primary schools with great scholastic records, but who lack the resources for a high school education.
Set up and build a library project or physical structure that is accessible to students to access educational resources.
Partner with the local and national government in supporting the aforementioned goals.
